Decent Room, Free Night Earned: Review of H+ Muenchen by Wyndham in Munich, Germany

For my 1 night in Munich, I stayed at the H+ Muenchen, near many of the tourist locations. While the hotel itself was adequate and not my favorite, I loved paying less than $100 for a night and earning more than enough points for a free Vacasa rental thanks to Wyndham’s partnership!

Conclusion

Intro:

My room for this quick stay in Munich. Photo by: Evan Berman

As previously mentioned, I had 1 night and only 20 hours in Munich, where I chose to stay at the H+ Muenchen by Wyndham. As with Budapest, I took advantage of a tremendous promo to earn thousands of bonus Wyndham points. Wyndham has a wonderful rewards program, especially with redemptions for Vacasa rental properties starting at just 15,000 points per bedroom per night (13,500 with a Wyndham credit card) can provide excellent value. While most Wyndham properties are anything but luxurious, H+ is a decent mid-tier hotel. I chose this hotel as there was a promotion at the time where if you spent 3 or more nights during the qualification period (these did not have to be consecutive), you would earn an extra 15,000 points. In total, I earned 16,953 points from this short stay, more than enough for a free night!

Thankfully, in this hotel I did not run into an issue with the previous guests having smoked inside the non-smoking room! I arrived at 4:18pm and took the opportunity to relax for an hour before getting changed and heading out to explore Munich and attend the Starkbierfest. In all, I spent no more than 8 hours in the room, and most of the was spent with my eyes closed! In all, this hotel was adequate– the price was terrific, the earnings above and beyond, and the overall experience from the size to the comfort of the bed was decent.

Booking:

A very reasonable price for a night in Munich! Photo by: Evan Berman

I looked at booking hotels in Munich both using points and paying cash. W+ Muenchen is a Wyndham property and as such Wyndham Rewards Points are the relevant currency. This time, cash was the better route. I paid 91.50 Euro ($97.63 at the time). The points pricing would have been 15,000 Wyndham Points per night and would not have earned the points from the stay.

This cheapest price was for a Queen Bed in a “non-smoking Standard Room.” Wyndham room rates vary and this time the Cardmember flexible rate was cheapest. This is great as I was able to make adjustments to the booking had something come up and I needed to change/cancel.

Price: $97.63

Points: 16,953 Wyndham Rewards Points

Value:

The points earned for my stay, not including those from using my Barclays Wyndham Rewards Business Earner Card (review) at 8x per $1. Photo by: Evan Berman

As mentioned above, one night at the Ramada by Wyndham Budapest City Center costs $97.63 via the Wyndham website. I could have redeemed 15,000 points per night at this hotel (13,500 with a Wyndham credit card), but this is a redemption below 1 cent per point and I value Wyndham points at 1.1 cents per point. Had the hotel award price been 7,500 points per night, I would have redeemed but as such it was a better deal to pay cash.

11/10, Above and Beyond. While I did pay cash again, $98 per night is very reasonable for Germany. Additionally, I earned more than enough points for a free night by paying for this night which is what makes this such a terrific value!

View:

Not exactly the view that I had in mind! Photo by: Evan Berman

Once again, this was a city hotel. This time, the view from the 2nd floor (3rd floor in America) looked straight out at the building that was under construction across the street.

5/10, Poor. There was no view in this room. Thankfully, I was able to see the sights of Munich outside of looking out the window but it is always nice to have a view!

Service:

Thankfully, nothing was wrong with my stay this time so I had no need to interact with staff outside of check-in and check-out. The only detractor from service was that when I went to check out, nobody was at the front desk. As this was at 10:20am on a Sunday, it seemed strange that I had to wait 5 minutes before a staff member came out to check the front desk. It was the manager of the hotel and he apologized for this delay. In all, no harm, no foul, though this was not a great way to end the stay!

7/10, Decent.

Furniture:

Back to the 2 separate duvets on a Queen bed! Photo by: Evan Berman

This room had 1 queen bed, and once again I was treated to a blanket but no top sheet. This time, much like my stay in Tromsø at the Clarion Collection Hotel With, the bed was made with 2 separate coverings, despite it being a Queen sized bed. To reiterate the issue I have with this approach, the basic problem is that you will either be hot (under the blanket) or cold (nothing on top of you). It is nearly impossible for me to sleep at an appropriate temperature this way, though I do run hot and like to turn the AC on full blast and use just a top sheet.

As it seems to be a rule that every hotel has some good aspects and some bad aspects, the bed was much more comfortable than the one in Budapest. It was solid and made for quality sleep.

The chair was surprisingly full of character compared to the rest of the mostly muted room! Photo by: Evan Berman

Additionally, there was a modest chair to sit at the tiny desk. While I did not get much use out of it during my stay, the chair was quite comfortable and I would be happy to sit in it and conduct meetings, had this been necessary.

8/10, Very Good. While the desk was quite small and the madness with the bedding continued, I was happy with the comfort of both the bed and chair, the most important aspects of the bedding category for me.

Bathroom:

The tiny shower. Photo by: Evan Berman

The bathroom was decidedly small, especially the shower. While the offerings were not terrible and everything worked well, I couldn’t help but feel that space could have been used more efficiently. The main issue I have with small showers is you are guaranteed to get water all over the floor of the bathroom as was the case here. And, there’s no room for a waterfall shower! 🙁

Next to the sink was the toilet:

7/10, Decent. The bathroom was way too small. That said, everything functioned as intended (hot water, decent pressure, etc.) so I cannot be too picky here. While I was not impressed, the bathroom was adequate for 1 night.

Location:

The location of the hotel, slightly to the west of downtown Munich, in close proximity to many of the tourist hotspots. Photo by: Evan Berman

This hotel is located in a great area for exploring. While approximately 45 minutes to the airport via train, it is roughly 1 mile to the art museum and .75 miles to the Cathedral, Palace of Justice, and other historical buildings and museums. This is a great spot to stay, which is why there are so many hotels nearby!

10/10, Excellent.

Electronics:

A decent tv with a handy shelf below! Photo by: Evan Berman

As with most of the hotels I stay in, this one has a medium-sized tv, though I did not check it out. The wifi was decent, though I did not have to work on this trip so no Zoom test this time! There was a password required to use the password which is a small security measure I appreciate.

9/10, Great. I appreciated having a password requirement for the wifi!

Food and Drink:

The hotel offered breakfast, but it was not included. I have harped before about how this is a weak point of the top-tier Wyndham Diamond status you get from the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card. As such, I ate at the airport lounge.

N/A.

Overall:

8/10, Very Good.

This one is challenging. On the one hand, booking a room for under $100 on a Saturday night in a major city in the West is incredible. That, coupled with the more than 16,000 points that I earned from this 1 night stay (more than enough for a free night in a vacation rental in Hawaii!), makes this an excellent stay. On the other hand, the bathroom (particularly the shower) and desk were tiny, there was no view, and I was once again dealing with a warm duvet and no top sheet on the bed. I’ve compromised and gone with overall, this stay was very good. Just note that with normal earning (i.e. no crazy 15,000 point bonus), this drops to a 7/10 and is hanging on to that spot!

From the hotel, I headed to the airport where I would visit the Lufthansa lounge before continuing my Lufthansa Economy Class journey, this time to Zagreb, Croatia before continuing on to Split with the first of many Croatian Airlines and twin-propeller flights!
