Incredible View, Great Experience: Review of Clarion Collection Hotel With in Tromsø, Norway

A harbor view sounds nice, but looking out your window is even better. Clarion Hotel With offered a wonderful stay! Photo by: Evan Berman

I stayed in Tromsø, Norway for 2 nights and had 1 night at 2 different hotels. The second night that I stayed in Tromsø was at Clarion Collection Hotel With. This review of my stay is a part of the larger Nordic Expedition. For more on this trip, follow these links:

My Salangen at Clarion Hotel With in Tromsø, Norway! Photo by: Evan Berman

I purposely chose 2 separate 1-night stays in Tromsø to get a room with a harbor view. I recently reviewed the Clarion Hotel Aurora.

Once again, I went with a Choice Hotels property due to the attractive value arbitrage in points. My 2nd (and final, unfortunately) night, I stayed at Clarion Hotel With. No, I’m not leaving off words, that’s the name of the hotel.

Clarion Hotel With is a newer hotel than Clarion Hotel Aurora, where I stayed the previous night, but is in largely the same format as the former.

Booking:

Though I ended up purchasing a different amount of points, you can see that I took advantage of the 30% bonus on purchased points. Photo by: Evan Berman

I purchased 44,200 Choice Points for $350.20 and transferred 15,800 points from Capital One for a total of 60,000 points.

My room selection options. I opted for the Supreme Deluxe Room with a Harbor View (seen at the top). Photo by: Evan Berman

Clarion Hotel With is a Nordic Choice Hotel and I used 16,000 points for a 1-night stay.

By using points, I could choose between a standard room, deluxe upgraded room, or supreme room with a harbor view. I chose the supreme room with the harbor view and was was pleased by the location directly off the stairs on the 2nd floor, as well as the fantastic view of the harbor.

Value:

My reservation for this one-night stay. Photo by: Evan Berman

As mentioned above, I booked this hotel for 16,000 Choice Points.

One night costs $261 via the Choice website. As such, I had 1.63 cents per point in value or paid $126.77 to book this night ($350.20/44,200*16,000=126.77).

10/10, Excellent. I’ve had better redemptions (over 2 cents per point is common with Hyatt and I’ve gotten 2 cents per point from Hilton as well). That being said, this is a luxury hotel that I booked for 16k points or $126.77. This is incredible value!

View:

The view of the harbor outside Clarion Hotel With is incredibly beautiful! Photo by: Evan Berman

This view was incredible! I spent quite a good deal of time staring out at the harbor. Yes there were many boats, but it was easy to see the mountains in the background and the water glistening under the moon and the lights from the other boats.

10/10, Excellent. There may be better views out there, but I was ecstatic to see the harbor. It’s hard to get a more beautiful view than that of the water at night!

Service:

The service in this hotel was great. The woman who checked me in was friendly and the other front desk agent was happy to hear about my pleasant stay when I checked out early the next morning. He was happy to help direct me to the bus schedule to the airport and where to go to meet the bus. I appreciated the help.

9/10, Great.

Furniture:

This room had 1 queen bed, though again there were two separate duvets and no top sheets.

There were two chairs in the room. One was for the desk and another simply to relax. I sat in each and can safely say that the chair removed from the desk was much more comfortable than the one in front of it. That being said, both were more than adequate for the minimal time that I spent in the room.

The desk itself was fine, though nothing to write home about.

9/10, Great. Everything was comfortable and functional. That being said, there was nothing that stood out as being better than usual.

Bathroom:

Finally, a Clarion Hotel with 😉 a shower that I approve of! With glass that goes nearly all the way up to the ceiling and a door that is similarly tall, this shower was built to keep the water inside the shower area.

Unfortunately, that came at the cost of a disappointing shower head and pressure. The temperature was frustrating as well: in order to have warm hater, you needed to turn the temperature up so the new level burnt the skin. Then after 30-45 seconds, the temperature would drop enough to leave the individual showering with cold water. Rinse and repeat! (Adjust and repeat?)

9/10, Great. The inability to prevent the bathroom floor from being soaked by the shower takes away from the otherwise fantastic shower (and luxurious feel of the heated floors!).

Location:

The outside of the hotel. As you can see, the harbor is just behind. Photo by: Evan Berman

This hotel was across the street from the Clarion Hotel Aurora. As always, it is challenging to be objective when rating location. One man’s perfect location is another’s unsatisfactory as the saying goes.

I was pleased with the ability to walk to everything and how the harbor was mere feet outside the hotel.

10/10, Excellent.

Electronics:

As with most of the other hotels, this one has a medium-sized tv, though I did not check it out. Again, the wifi was fast and when I took a meeting, I noticed no difference from the speed I get at home. Once again, there was no password on the wifi but I did not mind.

9/10, Great. As with the other hotels, I note there was no password for the hotel wifi. However, I do not deduct points for a minor issue such as that.

Food and Drink:

The hotel provided 3 meals, a breakfast, fika (a small cake), and dinner. Again, I did not taste any of them, though I appreciate the ability to have your meals included in the price of the hotel.

N/A. This is a great benefit but I did not taste the food, thus I do not know whether the food was worth eating or not.

Overall:

9/10, Great.

My stay at Clarion Hotel With, was fantastic all-around. The view was incredible and the value was once again terrific. The shower is the only item that was less-than-perfect, resulting in a 9/10 rating.

Next up: I returned to Oslo and will review my terrific meals in Oslo.
